About

"Illuminating the Pharos" is an play-on words concerning the Lighthouse (or: Pharos) of Alexandria and the Egyptian rulers of old, pharaohs.

It's not very good as puns go, but it sort of works.

This site serves to aggregate any and all news coming out of Egypt concerning the upcoming presidential election.

I hope to provide the background to the election in a clear and concise manner for those who know little to nothing about the current Egyptian political climate.

I also intend to effectively place the elections in a larger historical and social context for those who are unfamiliar with the country's recent history and current issues.

(If I am not succeeding in doing this please do not hesitate to let me know.)

My experience in the region is brief -- I spent a year at the Arabic Language Institute in Cairo, Egypt, and two months at the Qasid Institute in Amman, Jordan -- but I do my best to keep as well-informed as possible and have a relatively firm grasp of recent Egyptian history (i.e. 18th c. to present).

I am currently an MA Journalism student at Kingston University, London. I received my BA in political science from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
